Abstract
This article analyses backsliding and risks facing Latin American democracies 50 years since the third wave of democratization. Despite significant advances in electoral matters, participation, and representation, today the region increasingly faces a context of authoritarian setbacks and democratic deterioration that are not the result of coups d'états but from gradual processes of erosion. The use of democratic institutions and rules themselves, often with broad citizen support, have weakened the equilibrium of powers, the autonomy of countervailing bodies, the full exercise of freedoms and rights, as well as the rule of law. Thus, historical obstacles to strengthening full democratic regimes, such as inequality and weak state institutions, are compounded by the growing wave of crime and violence. To face these challenges, it is essential to foster resilient institutions and promote collaboration between social and political actors.
