Abstract
This article analyzes the evolution of trust in democratic institutions in Mexico between 1995 and 2024 using data from the Latinobarómetro. The study adopts a quantitative approach based on repeated cross-sectional data, with a descriptive, comparative, and inferential scope. The results show a significant variation across institutions and presidential terms of office, as well as the existence of a common underlying dimension of institutional trust. Moreover, despite declining trust in the presidential figure between 2020 and 2024, the aggregate mean of institutional trust increased during López Obrador’s term and reached its highest historical level. Overall, the findings suggest that political trust in Mexico has followed an uneven trajectory, more closely associated with specific presidential contexts than with a sustained linear trend.
